Functional Analysis (FA)

Technical definition, clinical ABA application, discriminative non-examples, and test-day traps for behavior analysis candidates.

Formal Definition

An experimental method in which antecedents and consequences representing those in the person's natural environment are arranged within an analog laboratory or clinical setting so that their separate effects on problem behavior can be observed and measured.

✓ Clinical Example

An analyst alternates between Attention, Demand (Escape), Alone (Automatic), and Play (Control) test conditions in 10-minute blocks using a multielement design.

✗ Contrast / Non-Example

Asking teachers to complete a 16-item questionnaire about why a child acts out (indirect assessment, not functional analysis).

⚠️ How This Concept is Tested (Exam Trap)

High rates of behavior exclusively in the Alone condition suggest automatic reinforcement. Differentiated high rates in Demand suggest escape/avoidance.
