What Changed for RBTs in 2026? 3rd Edition Outline & Rules
As of January 1, 2026, the Behavior Analyst Certification Board® implemented substantial updates to the Registered Behavior Technician® (RBT®) credentialing pathway. Here is what candidates, technicians, and supervisors must know.
1. Mandatory RBT 3rd Edition Test Content Outline (TCO)
Effective January 1, 2026, all new RBT certification applicants are tested under the 3rd Edition Test Content Outline. The curriculum consolidates entry-level scope across six core sections:
Notice that Behavior Acquisition (25%) and Behavior Reduction (19%) together constitute 44% of the entire exam.
2. Transition to 2-Year Recertification Cycles
Previously, RBTs were required to recertify on an annual (1-year) basis. Under the updated standards, RBTs now operate on a 2-year maintenance cycle.
New Renewal Requirements:
- Submit a renewal application every 2 years.
- Obtain 12 Professional Development Units (PDUs) over the 2-year cycle.
- At least 2 PDUs must cover ethics and professional standards.
- Pass a periodic RBT renewal competency assessment administered by a qualified supervisor.
3. Clarified Boundaries of Direct Implementation
The 3rd Edition TCO places heightened emphasis on professional scope. Test items evaluate whether the candidate understands that technicians implement behavior intervention plans and functional skill protocols designed by BCBAs, and do not independently design treatment, choose extinction targets, or alter protocols without supervisor authorization.
